Description
Up for sale is this very old, handsome antique pool table in excellent refurbished condition. It is an 8’ oversize model, with a playing area between cushions of 46” x 92”. The reproduction name plate is Brunswick–Balke-Collender, but I have never seen this model in any of the old catalogs or on their web site. It may even be an H. W. Collender, made prior to the merging with Brunswick. I have seen this model before, but am not sure of the origin. If anyone knows, please email me and I will be sure to amend this listing. *** After talking with another antique table dealer, our best guess is that this is a Missouri Billiard Mfg. Co. pool table, a company that ceased operations in St. Louis around 1921. The table has 4 slates, one inch thick. They are original and in excellent condition. The pocket openings have wood inserts which have been replaced with new poplar wood. The slate is framed in poplar wood on the bottom side. Typically, old tables that have 4 slates were made prior to the 1900’s, and the best guess among my colleagues is that this table was made between 1880 and 1890. The frame, legs, and rail sides of the table are elm. No inlays, just the beauty of the wood grain to embellish the form of the table. The rail caps are quarter sawn oak. It has new mother of pearl diamond sights all around. The rail bolts are 4.5” long with a coarse 3/8” x 14 thread. The bolt heads are threaded to accept the brass caps held on by small bolts. On the foot rail, there is a rectangular area that has been repaired. A previous owner had put a personalized nameplate on, which was removed so a diamond sight could be restored in the proper place, and a closely matching piece of quarter-sawn oak replaced in the empty spot (see the pictures). The cushion rubber has recently been replaced, so this table plays like new. It comes with a new standard green Simonis 860 bed cloth and the standard green Simonis on the rails has only been used slightly, so it should match well. The pockets are the original #3 type iron that has a beveled metal rectangle exposed on the top of the rail cap. I had the irons re-plated in shiny brass about 20 years ago, and it has worn off slightly. The iron covers, originally black, have worn to a beautiful brown leather patina, shined by the hands of untold players. The last man who owned this table was in his late 80’s and played on this table every day, for many years. The nets are crocheted linen, hand crocheted by my mother who still crochets linen nets to this day, at 91. The fringe is new old stock, original green and burgundy twisted fringe that was standard issue on tables shown in the old Brunswick catalogs from the 1920’s. The pockets are not tacked to the wood pocket block, but held in place by rigid wire woven through the front edge of the pocket, and looped at the ends for the pocket bolts to hold them snugly in place. This prevents tacks coming loose and the linen from becoming frayed. This auction is for the table and cloth only. I do have a billiard store in Columbia, MO and can provide new, restored, or raw old antique cue racks, ball racks, triangles cues and balls at an additional cost. The table is now in a disassembled state and will need to be assembled by a billiard mechanic when it reaches its final destination. Assembly is not included in this auction, but if the purchaser lives within one or two hundred miles of my location, I would be able to see to its assembly at an additional charge, depending upon location. I would like to see this table picked up at my location by the buyer, however it can be crated and freighted if necessary. We will protectively crate and palletize this table for shipping by truck for $400. Shipping to most parts of the US is typically around $400. The cost of shipping will have to be determined after the auction, and so is not included as a part of the price. It will be listed as pick-up only, but there are options. I have been in the billiard business for over 30 years and stand behind all the products I sell, new, used and antique. Check my feedback rating for comments from satisfied customers.
