Description
The Woman Athlete of the 20th Century Babe Dedrikson is found in this 1929 high school yearbook from Texas! Included in the Girls Sports section, Mildred Dedrikson stars in five sports and is pictured six times, including twice in basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, and baseball teams (2 of these included in below scans). Especially nice large head and shoulders basketball shot with detailed write-up on her season's heroics, the team going 6-0 and outscoring their opponents by 244-64 points. This was the school's first time venturing in girl's golf, and so this may be Babe's first year photoed in this way. As well in Tennis, Babe and another girl were the league doubles champions and were to play in the State Tournament. There are also two nice full page works of art featuring women in sports. Great vintage photos! Mildred Ella Dedrikson is considered by many to be the greatest all-around female athlete of all time. She grew up in Texas and acquired the nickname "Babe" after Babe Ruth when she hit five home runs in a baseball game. She was an All-American in Basketball. She won two gold medals and a silver in the 1932 Los Angeles World Olympics (she was only allowed to enter 3 events!). She had previously won 5 out of 8 events in the AAU Championships! In 1938 she competed in a Men's PGA Tournament, something that no other woman would do until Annika Sorenstam. In 1946-1947 she won the U.S. Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, then won the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship (the 1st American to do so), and three Western Opens, the Titleholders Championship, and the U.S. Open, completing the Laidies Grand Slam, and winning 17 straight Amateur tournaments, which is an accomplishment never equaled (not even by Tiger Woods). Byron Nelson said that he knew of only 8 professional men golfers who could out-drive her. She was president of the LPGA from 1952-55 and was in the top ranking of players when she died. She is in the Women's Golf Hall of Fame. In 1957 she was given the Bob Jones Award. In 1999 Babe Dedrikson Zaharias was declared by Associated Press Woman Athlete of the 20th Century ! As well she was listed by ESPN as #10 in their Top 50 Athletes of the Century, the top ranked woman. Although one could go on, a few of the unexpected biographical notes on Babe Zaharias are that she won the 1931 State Fair of Texas Sewing Championship, and later recorded for Mercury Records on vocals and harmonica, scoring a hit with "I Felt a Little Teardrop." Note: her name in the book is printed as Babe Dedriksen. This school annual is in good condition with a reasonably tight binding and solid text with clean pages, and no must or mildew or missing pieces of any kind. There is a slight bow to the front board, the back cover is attached and looks solid but does separate from the hinge if you open it completely (180 degrees) at that point. There is a one inch rift on the top spine. And a quarter inch chip on the spine. All in all this is a strong example of this old issue that holds together very well. Here is an exceptional piece of sports memorabilia featuring the early life and times of an amazing American figure! If you are an enthusiast of Golf, the Olympics, Women's Athletics, or Sports in general, this will make a swell addition to your collection. Postage is $5. Satisfaction Guaranteed.
